Everybody has an idea that they think will net them millions of dollars and a chance to quit their collision repair Windsor job and retire to some beach in Mexico. It's the dream that will never go away. Some people end up coming up with an idea that becomes the next best thing but most end up with an invention idea that goes nowhere.

If you have an invention that you feel is a winner and that you want to market it for sale then you should look into applying for a patent for your idea. You must patent your idea if you have any desire whatsoever to see it through to the end. Whether your invention revolves around custom license plate frames that plays music or heating up day old pizzas without microwaves, you need to be protected.

Your invention idea is your own intellectual property and a patent for it will protect you from anybody else stealing your idea and profiting off it for a certain period of time. Patents give inventors exclusive rights for their idea in exchange of unveiling the invention to the public. What good is it to have an idea for something that will make pavers better and not provide it to the public. Imagine if Steve Jobs had never revealed the iPod?

In order to get a patent you need to fill out a patent application at a patent office and be granted a patent for your idea or invention. A patent application must provide information on your invention and forms or correspondence that are related to the application that show the idea is yours and that you didn't steal it from somebody else.

You should only apply for a patent once you know your invention is worth something. Put the work in to develop your invention idea for instant framed prints or lipstick that tastes like peanut butter once you've done the research showing a demand for it and after you've made working prototypes. If you still feel your invention is going to be that one to revolutionize the industry and make you lots and lots of money you can then apply for a patent.

A patent for your invention might lead you to feel secure in your invention and go off to start your own best home based business or just protect you from having your invention stolen. Both are reasons why you should apply for a patent for your invention.
